Utrecht: care for healthcare
Nowhere in the Netherlands will you find such a large diversity of top-class hospitals, clinics, knowledge institutes, life science companies, medical suppliers and policy organizations as in the Utrecht healthcare sector. No less than 40,000 jobs, 17% of the total number of jobs in Utrecht, are directly associated with care organizations and institutions.
The University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) has acquired worldwide fame in, for example, the area of oncology. The pioneering innovations of the UMCU and UU have led to the arrival of many international life science companies at the Utrecht Science Park. Examples of this are Genmab, the European research center of Nutricia and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital and the new Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology ensure that children in Utrecht receive the best care. The St. Antonius Hospital is a leading, national expertise center for heart, vascular and lung surgery.
No wonder that nearly all policy organizations for healthcare are based in Utrecht; organizations such as the Nationale Zorgautoriteit, the Inspectie voor Gezondheidszorg, Orde Medisch Specialisten, KNMG and NHG. Furthermore, De Wetering business park is home to a cluster of medical supply companies, such as Mediq, Meekers Medical, Simed Stöpler and Telstar Life Sciences.
